Term 1 Biological Sciences Year 1: Students investigate mini beasts in the school yard. They will use their Science Inquiry Skills to make predictions and observe the features and behaviours of small animals while getting a glimpse of the diversity of animal life. Year 2: The students discover that all species share in the same cycle of growth, change, reproduction and death. They observe and explore the growth of a range of living things, including meal worms, frogs and plants. They investigate factors that affect the life cycle of a meal worm. Year 3: Students discover how scientists develop classification systems to understand how species are related. They begin to explore the features of living things and ways they can be grouped together. Year 4: Students study life cycles of plants and animals. They will use Science Inquiry Skills to investigate the effect of different factors on the germination of seeds and discover how all components of the bush are linked. Year 5: The students use Science Inquiry Skills to learn how an animal's adaptations and structural features help them survive in their environment. Investigations will be based on camouflage and animal features. Year 6: Living things include microorganisms and year 6 students research yeasts and moulds. They research the optimal conditions for yeast growth and investigate mould growth under different conditions.
